N.C. Sheriff's Deputy Dies Day after Standoff Shooting

A North Carolina sheriff's deputy died Tuesday, a day after he was critically wounded in a standoff.

Wayne County Sheriff's Sgt. Matthew Fishman was shot and wounded at about 11 a.m. Monday while serving involuntary commitment papers to a home, WNCN-TV reports. Two other deputies—Cpl. Andrew Cox, 37, and deputy Alexander Ramon Torres, 27—also were wounded in the shooting, and they were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

A nearly nine-hour standoff ensued following the shooting as the gunman barricaded himself inside the home. The incident ended when the suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gov. Roy Cooper announced Fishman's death during a Council of State meeting.

"Today, I want us to adjourn this meeting in honor of Wayne County Sgt. Matthew Fishman and all of our law enforcement officers who are courageously doing their jobs and have been injured and killed in the line of duty." he said.
